Growing Up On The Road With His Bare Naked Family // Freely Roaming Podcast Episode 27
#ModernNomad #MobileLiving #VanLife
We met Austin and his family back in 2012 shortly after they resettled in Austin, Texas, his namesake city, after years of living nomadically on the road. His parents, Greg and Jen, were the first couple we met who chose to raise their kids from the road. Back when we were just roaming around North America with infants and toddlers. Austin has since settled into a new life in Durango, Colorado where we got to catch up with him in this episode. We talked about a wide range of topics from his time on the road with his family to becoming a photographer, and storyteller with dreams of setting sail across the Pacific.

If I want to charge the lithium battery from my car battery and I already have a 500 W inverter is there a battery charging device I can just plug into the inverter? I just feel like there must be some redundancy having an inverter plugged into my battery and then having the battery charger plugged into that.

Thank you taking the time to do this. I had to make a decision a few months ago. We were owners of a FWC Hawk since 2013. Loved all the places we went during that time with the F250. Getting up there in the age, it was getting more challenging loading/unloading after each trip. Shuffling stuff every time we stopped or getting ready to leave, got too much for us. We were fortunate to sell the entire rig to a young family that wanted a rig like ours. I'm now waiting for completion of the buildout of our Ford Transit 2024. Hopefully end Aug 2024. All of your comparisons were spot on and I had to make the same decisions about this change. Yes the cost is upwards of $150k if you want it done right. Happy trails to you and family!

I’ve considered doing one battery for my boat, but the issue with that are that my battery box is about 25” long, 10” high and only 8” wide and the width is where I have run into an issue with using one battery… The extremely annoying part is that I have watched tear down videos and most of the space inside is just pieces of foam and air. I’m still considering using one and ripping it out of the case, but that will destroy any hopes of warranty that you think that you have. I’ve considered just making one with no case, but I do like the idea of a manufactured one and welded connections. I really just wish lfepo4 manufacturers would just STOP trying to make them “look” like regular batteries altogether. I can understand having those models available to fit in spaces as a replacement, but offering just “bare” batteries would be great too. Most people building a power wall don’t need them to look like a regular battery for any reason, so stop trying to make them look like a regular battery in the first place. I’m just going to end up with making my own battery in the end. I will be able to make a battery that will have 560ah in the same space I would only be able to fit 2x 100ah batteries in. So 560 vs 200 isn’t that hard of a decision to make, I had just wanted “welded” connections apposed to a bolt or nut…

I have a sailboat, the battery box will barely fit a group 31 batteries and at most I would be able to fit 2x 100ah batteries, so 200ah would be my limit. However, looking over measurements, I can fit 8x 280ah cells giving me 560ah. It doesn’t take much convincing that I don’t really need a case or a battery that looks like a battery because that’s more “acceptable” to most people. I’ve watched tear down videos and it’s nothing but foam and air, so it’s useless to me, I want the ah rather than the looks.

I love the Hollyland lark M2 that I just purchased on Prime Day. It's one of the best purchases I've ever made, especially for the great price. The sound, imo is just so clean and natural and just sounds professional. The only thing I absolutely strongly dislike is the wind muff. It's so frustrating trying to put it in and then remembering where the actual mic is to speak into. I think they should have done better with that.

Can u use a lead acid battery 12 v, and connect it directly to ecoflow river 2 max?! ( how much amps does a battery give out)?

My cat’s been getting out, lately. Shes even come up with ways to sneak out when people enter/exit the house. I feel fortunate to have found her the few times she’s gotten out, but she’s gotten way more bold, lately. I had to wear her out and catch her to get her back. So, I’ve gotten her implant and am thinking of going the AirTag & Tractive route to make sure I can find her when it’s time to come back in. In Phoenix, it’s just too hot to leave em out. Plus, there’s a lot of wildlife in the desert that can pick her off. So, I’m hoping that it being a big city, the AirTag might be the best choice w/ the Tractive

A tip I've seen on the wago connectors that you are using to bus the 12 volt source to the POE injector and router, is to get Wago lever nut connectors with 1 additional connection that normally you don't use. That said, having it means you can do something like add a 12 socket in line, or attach a power monitor so you can see if your power is dropping below 10 volts, which is about the lower limit that you want to have for 12v batteries. Amazon has 4 port Wago connectors (at the moment) in lots of 100 for $1.59 USD. And if you want to do all of the above, and add the option for even more ports, you can use the extra port to jumper to another block and you've now got 3 additional ports, or get a wago with more ports. It may be a good idea to color the case of the Wago connector related to the voltage and polarity they carry. Yellow is common in PC's for 12 volt, and red for 5 volt. In many autmotive setups, +12v is red. Black is often ground. Note that if you're wiring to a camper's battery supply be very careful to know what that color coding means. In my pop-up camper, the ground wire is white, and the +12 cable is black. I've never used that to supply 12 volts, but people may want to be aware of it before they start hooking up power to their equipment. Sanity check the voltages.

Best resource for Starlink news! The new Mini Roam plan seems like a good fit for those who only need it a few times per month. Either way, glad Starlink came to their senses and included the mini with stand-alone plans. Now if only I could use the Mini Roam with our gen 2 dish 🤔
